My time in the cardiac ward was enlightening.
First, I was by far the youngest-looking one there, other than some of the nurses (and by the way cardiac nurses are hot).
When I was walking the halls in boredom and tension waiting for the surgery date, about half of the patients were tragically out of shape and more than a few qualified for "Morbidly obese" category. There was only a small handful of people I'd call in the "elderly" category.
One that stood out in my mind was the woman who'd had her open heart and was refusing to get out of bed. From what I overheard she'd been out of the ICU for a week already and had yet to stand.
I can clearly remember thinking, "Such a god-damned waste."
