This is a very thoughtful observation indeed. Hadn't thought it that way before, and I realize that you're right.

My time in the cardiac ward was enlightening.

First, I was by far the youngest-looking one there, other than some of the nurses (and by the way cardiac nurses are hot).

When I was walking the halls in boredom and tension waiting for the surgery date, about half of the patients were tragically out of shape and more than a few qualified for "Morbidly obese" category. There was only a small handful of people I'd call in the "elderly" category.

One that stood out in my mind was the woman who'd had her open heart and was refusing to get out of bed. From what I overheard she'd been out of the ICU for a week already and had yet to stand.

I can clearly remember thinking, "Such a god-damned waste."

Was this before or after ObamaCare? I'm guessing before, because if it was after . . .

I work in a casino and it's really frustrating seeing these older people hobble (the better off ones anyway, as plenty use walkers, scooters, hooked up to oxygen, etc.) from machine to machine pushing the damned button for 45 hours a week. If only they could cut their play down to 42 hours and use the extra free time to squat down a few times with a barbell on their back and stand back up. It boggles the mind how people struggle physically to roll out of bed each morning but have zero motivation to fix it.

I saw a patient incinerate himself in an emergency room. He was a COPD patient on oxygen having an acute exacerbation. He was in a private room and his nurse took his cigarettes and his lighter. What she didn't anticipate was a spare cigarette and a pack of matches. Set himself on fire in a BIG way before we could blast him with multiple fire extinguishers. Ended up in the ICU on a vent. Care was withdrawn the following day and he passed.

I guess he was trying to prove to the RN that he could outsmart her. Stupid nurses.
