If you're going to go through that work, you might as well just wire brush all of the rust off of the equipment and then take care of it properly.

Spraying the liquid and wiping it down is much easier than wire brushing everything. I use the technique to rehab hand planes and will keep the iron phosphate coating on surfaces that aren't touching wood.
