    Hi Coach,

I was informed today by one of the trainers at the gym that I should lighten the weight I lift because my lift speed is too slow.

It can take upwards of 10 seconds for me to complete the rep when I am lifting heavy loads. This generally occurs when I am doing "limit" singles for my workout.

Is this something new regarding bar speed or is this just nonsense?

I remember back in the '80s when the buzz was about "time under tension" but there it was at the other extreme of non-limit loads being lifted in a very slow fashion. As an aside, that did nothing for me in terms of strength but did make me very sore.

My personal suggestion: next time he talks out of his ass, you should lift it up very slowly and then throw him across the room.

The RPEs are nonsense , but some think you can program around them.
