059: Strength Training with Brent Carter - The Six-Yard Box

Most athletes and coaches recognize that ‘strong’ is preferable to ‘weak,’ but there isn’t always agreement on how best to achieve strength – or what the word even means. Brent Carter is a Starting Strength coach with more than a decade of experience making people stronger – from power-lifters to athletes to ‘Average Joes’ – and he’s eager to cut through the confusion.

In today’s episode, Brent talks about what it means to be strong, and explains the many benefits of strength to all athletes, but to goalkeepers in particular. He also dispels a number of common misconceptions and outlines the most important elements in achieving consistent and efficient gains in a strength training program.

For those with little or no experience in the weight room, Brent also explains the ‘novice’ Starting Strength progression, which produces the biggest (and fastest) gains of all, and breaks down the proper form for the squat – the cornerstone exercise of the program.
