    It seems a little unclear as to whether the discussion is about self defense or competing in fighting arts as it developed. But it appears that you at least Nick, are talking mainly about competing. Is that the main message?

    Everything in the discussion applies to both. They shouldn't be separated. In terms of the final application, of course things are different because of rules and weight classes and stuff. This will spark some controversy, but training for competition and for self defense should look about the same most of the time if you're doing it right. Big picture - they shouldn't be much different.

    I'm not sure I agree, but then we've barely scratched the surface of this topic. It may well be that we do agree once some further discussion takes place.

    It's certainly important for Nick to agree with you. After a lifetime or two of experience, you obviously outrank everybody else.
