The average voter responds emotionally, not logically. The horror story is more effective when the story-teller makes the monster a 10 foot tall ravenous beast that wants kill us all instead of a common raccoon that just wants to rummage through the garbage can.

Erik's views on this topic are interesting. I hope he can tell us more without fear of persecution.

Is it? I’m not an infectious disease specialist. How does that compare to seasonal influenza?

In the USA, we’ve had between 31 and 51 MILLION influenza illnesses this season, with between 22 and 55 THOUSAND deaths (according to the CDC 2019-2020 U.S. Flu Season: Preliminary Burden Estimates | CDC). That’s for something we have a vaccine for.

I think we should all appreciate how many lives coronavirus has saved so far: COVID-19 reduces economic activity, which reduces pollution, which saves lives.

This is why is coronavirus is such bullshit, the whole society is overreacting on a minor illness that killed only 5000 people. And even if you do get sick, you will get have to take ONE day off work to rest in bed and you will be fine. Read the NYPost and Learn something about this virus and how everyone is panicking over a small deal. Woman who survived coronavirus shares her early symptoms

I read through this. Not every word, but a whole lot of it. I'm tempted to tell my family to be on lockdown for 1 week, with the exception of attending our church services, after reading that. I'm certainly going to let my assistant work from home when she returns from her spring break trip, for at least one week.

Of course, it's probably too late. (I'm in Tampa)

Surprised no one else has responded directly to your post yet, either.

I'm assuming you're replying to me.

Based on what I've heard in the media, and from some science/data nerds on twitter, older folks. I can't find it, but I saw in some article online that over 70 = ~40% of the deaths in Italy. ~75% are folks 55+. I do not know the rest of the demographic make up...male vs female, smoker vs non-smoker, obese vs 'lean', etc. Seems that, in general, the less healthy you are, the worse your potential outcome is. And since the US has a bunch of folks who are in terrible physical condition, it stands to reason that the results (if we're being told accurate information) will be not great here.

I've said this on other boards. This damn thing is no joke, and deserves to be respected. AND the media is - either intentionally or ignorantly - fanning these flames. Both can, and probably are, true.
