"Not capable of intentional virtue." Therefore, incapable of virtue signaling. Sounds naturally presidential.

Care to elaborate? I was promised a wall, a ban on muslim immigration, a renegotiation of NAFTA, a repeal of the affordable care act, a reinvigoration of the coal industry, a tax break (my bracket actually got a tax increase), a balance of the federal budget, a draining of the swamp, etc. etc. etc. Trump's fatal flaw is promises way to much. I can't think of another politician in the last half century who has failed so epically to deliver.
None taken. That was an earnest reply. I know intent can be hard to read via text.
What is this image, Rip? For all I know these are all convicted child molestors repenting for their sins.
I will be really surprised if Trump gets reelected. It would be the first time in our nation's history that a president gets re-elected in the middle of an economic downturn.
All compelling images to be sure, but none of them address your original claim that (white) people are being dragged out of their houses and assaulted for not being woke enough. In fact, most of the deaths you've included are of black people, which, if anything, only provides evidence to the claim you're attempting to refute. Black lives clearly don't matter, as evidenced by their wanton destruction in the clips you've shared above.
For someone from the NY metro area and has lived through his storied career, Trump is not a mystery to me. 25 years ago, he would have been an average president in terms of aggravating people. Had he ran for the Blues, which he did for a long time, particularly when he used to hang out with the Clintons, no one would have cared.
What really freaks me out are people like my parents, who should know better, who act like he’s some sort of Klan-hood-clad evil Moses riding into town from the wilderness.
Of course Trump isn't self-righteous. Self-righteousness suggests ideology. It suggests moral aspiration. It suggests belief in the sacred. These are not things Trump cares about or is capable of.
Oh, please. You can do better than this, Rip. Nobody likes him. Even people who support him don't like him. It's why you say things like, "The trick to liking Trump is to pay no attention to what he says or types." You'd refund his gym dues and ask him to leave within a month if he joined WFAC. Let's just be honest about the obvious aspects of his personality disorder--he does not do humility, or shame, or virtue, or empathy. Otherwise we end up saying things like, "Trump is like St. Paul."

I tried twice to make myself compile those tweet vids and pics in a reply. I book marked them but couldn't make myself do it. Thanks for taking the time to do that. Everyone here should force themselves watch those.
I am actively trying to put my feet up and watch all this play out in a more detached way. My current thoughts are consumed with the idea this is actually about race, and principals of nationalism vs. universal globalism and the new religion of equality. I honestly don't see what else this is all about, if not that.
It is easier to pretend this is about values and sleep soundly at night. I think I got a glimpse, over these 2 weeks, of how that ends up for normal folk. The conservative right has absolutely fucking nothing.
I don't know if this is the early stage of collapse, either. It's seeming more and more like a middle stage and it is palpable. Maybe this is what that looks and feels like when you're in it.

Weren't they the ones that were saying masks weren't effective, and then changed their minds and said that everyone should wear masks? I guess masks are back to not being helpful if you're not actually sick. What a clownshow.
In the late '70s I had an unpleasant encounter with police in the city of Hawthorne, a suburb of LA. The encounter occurred inside of the Hawthorne police station. The incident was witnessed by another police officer who stood by and did nothing while his boy jacked up a skinny teen-age kid who never in his life had been in trouble with the law. Like Itomo, it has coloured my perception of law enforcement. As George commented, the abusive cop was short in stature and had what I would call a "Napoleon complex".Quote:

When I told him I'd had a surf accident and was going to the hospital, he handed me back my DL, told me to drive safely and headed back to his car.
One visible difference between the two officers; the Hawthorne cop was white, the CHP officer was black.

What is it about the state of Virginia that makes "fine" people drive their cars into peaceful protestors?
Noah, it seems here that your strong desire to overhaul our country has clouded your thinking, causing you to gleefully describe looters & rioters as part of some bigger, laudable, "important historical moment."
Hopefully that part of your post was referring to citizens pushing back against CoVid restrictions, but the later Acrimony Against America (AAA) in your post leaves me thinking that this cannot be the case.
How in the world could a professorial, well-rounded person ignore the self-interest clearly evident in these rioting, looting, and assault actions by the "protesters," and think they are a vaunted, visceral response to police brutality and an "unfair" democratic system?? My toddler child screams at me when I pick him up to take him away from our patient pooch that he's been torturing, but I don't think for a moment that he's advocating some larger, noble plan to rearrange the hierarchy in our family. And said dog defecated on our carpet last night, but that's just because she could not control her biological instincts, not because she's trying to realign the potty rules in our household. Childish behaviors and acting upon base instincts are just that, immature and animal-like, even if the MSM colludes with the government to paint them as a legitimate expression of our 1A rights.
***Rip, that last post of mine referred to muntz AND Mr. Ebner, who lazily called my thinking racist (!) in his last post addressed to me, and Noah is still hanging around, so I do still think there are grounds to ALLOW it to go up. I do acknowledge that this is your sandbox, however. ;)
