Mark, the issue is partly that public (really MEDIA) pressure may start to build on the power 5 presidents to delay or cancel football this fall. It's not an athletic director decision. The president of the university votes, and the respective conferences proceed forward based on the president votes. Who knows what they will choose. I know a a school like FSU (my school) financially really needs football to happen, for budget purposes. We aren't loaded rich (like traditional B10 schools), but we aren't poor either, and no FB this season would nearly decimate our athletic dept. I can't imagine what it will do to schools who aren't in a position like us, which is most schools.
And now, some very loud whispers that the big 10 is going to be announcing in the next 24 hours that they aren't playing football this fall.
Excellent! Let's make stupidity hurt so bad that we reconsider it.

I see no desire among our Republican politicians, community leaders or generally the over 50 age demographic to let the universities suffer the consequences of their mistakes. And of course, none of the socialists, unions, lobbyists, contractors, globalists, affirmative action students etc. want to see the largest state owned enterprises in the United States fail or shrink. In addition, there are millions with credentials from the universities who like to pretend their piece of paper means something and gives them status.
Although it is not necessarily the case in some circles, like this board, the over 50 age demographic seems to mostly have good memories of a university experience that no longer exists, maintains its extremely strong faith in credentialism and views the university as an essential employer.
Other than Trump and a select few politicians, nobody is willing to see the universities fail. Our universities get a blank check on incompetence and buffoonery. I believe there will be a bail out and an expansion of our socialist government.
Yvngi, I don't care about the university failing or not....I'm a selfish SOB, I just want college football to be played! And if not played, for a legit reason.
If they came out and said...."we're not playing this year because concussion is a real issue and for the long term safety of our players, we're canceling", I'd at least respect their position.
The false concern is just repugnant.
Good memories you say?
Oh yeah. Discovering activist anti-war professors haranguing lecture classes about the Big Bad Nam. Memories of SIU when Old Main got burned to the ground. Or the Black Panthers failed ambush of the campus and city cops on the edge of campus. Or the storming of the ROTC building and Woody Hall by the radical students on campus. Maybe the riots on the main drag when two state highways were blocked by protesters and the ensuing sacking of businesses. You mean good memories of every LE agency in the region and state coming into town bolstered with 3000 National Guard and a lot of gas?
Lots of memories. Not, as you say, good ones though.
Today's COVID-19 fear porn, quite an assortment today:
55% of coronavirus patients still have neurological problems three months later: study - MarketWatch
At the bottom:There is some precedent for a pandemic creating a wave of neurological health problems. Svenn-Erik Mamelund, a social scientist who has studied the demography of epidemic diseases for more than 20 years, told Yahoo that there was a jump in reports of neurological and psychiatric problems worldwide for years after the 1918 flu pandemic. Survivors complained of trouble sleeping, dizziness, depression and difficulties at work. And many people reported similar neurological symptoms after the 1889 Russian flu and the 2009 H1N1 pandemic.

Coronavirus update: Global case tally climbs above 19 million; U.S. death toll moves above 160,000 after 11 straight days with 1,000-plus fatalities - MarketWatch
Another reminder: the population of the earth is 7.8 billion. That's 7,800,000,000. So, 0.00916% of the population has died of the deadly COVID-19 Pandemic so far in 2020. In 2019, 58.4 million people died, which means that even if you assume that all COVID-19 deaths were excess deaths -- a silly assumption, but okay, and given what we know about COVID death coding, an even sillier assumption -- using 2019's deaths as a starting place we get a death count this year of at least 59.11 million. Lets call it 60 million just to be "safe," and lets say that the deadly COVID-19 pandemic will kill another 100,000 people, for a total of 815,000 -- a preposterous assumption since it's over, but what the hell. This means that the deadly COVID-19 Pandemic will have killed 0.01045% of the earth's population -- 1.35% of the total number of deaths on earth. But the general public is completely innumerate, and 815,000 is a big number, so the propaganda works pretty well, the masks stay on, small businesses die, the Crown Jewel of Civilization NYC is changed forever, society is damaged incalculably, and power devolves to the biggest fools in this entire fucked-up scenario. The number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus illness COVID-19 climbed above 19 million worldwide on Friday, according to data aggregated by Johns Hopkins University, and the death toll rose above 715,000, with more than 160,000 of those deaths in the U.S., which has suffered 11 straight days with 1,000 or more fatalities.
Not one single thing in this entire response to this virus has been done correctly. Not one. But the momentum is overwhelming, and we are fucked.
