Unclear. The inertia preventing productive remote work - whether it be technical, organizational, or just cultural - has been overcome. The critical proportion of local to remote workers has been surpassed.
Tech companies have already made remote work permanent — and plan to reduce wages accordingly. In a world where remote work is widely accepted, the San Francisco software engineer will no longer deserve a wage twice as high as the one in Pittsburgh.

You obviously have not been talking to these people who are moving or paying attention to real estate/apartment prices. I meet more of them every day as my city deals with this refugee crises; They tell me they don't plan on ever returning to NYC or California.
People don't buy houses "in the middle of nowhere"(as they would say a couple of years ago), across the country if they plan on only moving temporarily. We have far surpassed our record real estate prices with the recent surge in migrants this spring/summer. Our traffic is gnarled even though things are still officially locked down. From the amount of traffic, an average day at a large park now makes it look like there was a concert or another event.
Most of these migrants refuse to assimilate, are waving their leftist flags and giving displaced residents the finger. Listen to Rogan's podcast if you still can't believe your eyes.

"One might hope that this could lead to more *fairness*, in the long run."
Off by a country mile, Mr. Hurling. There may be some critical arguments as to whether and under what conditions "fairness" should be judged by equal opportunity vs equal outcome, but the desire for "fairness" itself was baked into our DNA long before our species became differentiated from its forebearers.
A little concentrated (in time) wheat from chaff separation. Many of these folks were headed to the burbs, sooner or later, anyway. Those in need of mates (or just mating games) and desiring the best cultural experiences our age has to offer will always be drawn by the cities. Then there is the less well understood business advantages of co-location. Digitization has real value, but it doesn't trump biology by a long shot.
This taking-it-out-on-waiters thing really sums up today's society.
I think this gentlemen did a good job at telling Shasta County, CA just what he thought would happen if this continued.
