Blacks weren't exactly a minority in my neighborhood ...and the rites of passage ("initiation") were mine in the pre-teen years. Like the black kid in Barry's scout experience, I shook it off and never ratted on the kids despite a nasty injury. I lied to the adults about what happened. Those guys never forgot that and it served me well through high school.

I don't think people understand what some parts of the south were like. Many of the important role models in my life were black...the coaches, the disciplinarians at school, my band teacher, health teacher, civics teach, typing teacher, etc. These were all strong black men (and women) who we admired and respected. They dished out tough love and we NEVER mouthed off at them. In middle school, the black Assistant Principle used a HUGE paddle to punish kids (black AND white). You only made that mistake once.

Yes, the KKK was in the adjacent county, and we all turned our backs on them when they marched in the annual Christmas parade in the early 60s. And, there was still some racial tension but it was mostly among the generations before us. When my parents went on trips without us, they paid a black family in the projects to keep us safe there with them. My little sister was a toddler! Would that happen today?

We were raised on MLK's vision. It was simple enough for children to understand and embrace. As kids we felt like we were part of something important.

To understand what has changed today, I think you have to understand the difference between MLK's vision and that of James H Cone. Sorry, I'm repeating myself from an earlier post. But, what we see today with critical race theory, etc...is all James H Cone. It's a hard pill to swallow and will not end well.

MLK's vision is fueled by love. Cone's vision is fueled by anger.
Kitsuma, your experience is almost an exact match to mine, growing up in a mill town in NC. Very nicely put.

I literally thought this had to be from the Babylon Bee when I first heard it. Sadly, no. However, can anyone offer to me what they possibly thought was going to happen as a result of all this? Its just the beginning too.

jesus, the quote there is awful:
"These facemasks are the important, powerful public health tool we have ... I might even go so far as to say that this facemask is more guaranteed to protect me against COVID than when I take a COVID vaccine.”"
Doesn't give me much confidence in the coming vaccine program.

Do these guys even realize what they are saying?

He said, "When I take a vaccine, because the immunogenicity might be 70%, and if I don't get an immune response, the vaccine's not going to protect me. THIS FACE MASK WILL."

So, basically... With a vaccine, they're still going to force everyone to wear face masks.

Wait, but isnít the currently favored reason for the masks to prevent spreading via the magical droplets to others and not protect the wearers per se?

These midwits canít even get their bullshit stories straight.

Did the Californians of the 1970/80s who elected Nixon and Reagan vote for their children to be hounded by the police state, robbed and removed from their birth-land?
My response was in reference to Oregon Antifa starting fires and rioting. If the Mayor of Portland and the DA (both elected positions) supported the police and went after these guys hard, things would have been much different. Instead they don’t support the police, encourage the rioting and don’t press charges. I agree that appointed bureaucrats are a big problem as are illegal immigration.

IMHO the better response to Kitsuma's question is, when the clean people pick themselves up and remove themselves from the mess.
That doesn¬ít clean anything up though. That just delays the inevitable. When the good people leave, these socialists will eventually follow. If people don¬ít wake up and vote for representatives that will take these threats seriously and keep the peace then there is really only one alternative. Unless this is really what the people of Oregon want. If that¬ís the case, they should advertise this on their tourism sites, ¬ďVisit Oregon, burn down a local business!¬Ē

William Briggs made a good point about this recently, if anyone has been following him.

There are masks out there that actually protect the wearers. When I worked construction they were available for guys who wanted to go through the hassle of getting fitted for them. They're also available for Joe Schmo public, and if health officials really cared they'd inform people about how they could get a mask that actually does something, instead of telling them to wear a thin, ineffective piece of cloth over their mouths.

The masks are just so the overlords and the peons can feel like they're #makingadifference.

I fucked up the other day, went into a restaurant I hadn't been to in a while. They said I couldn't come in without a mask. I said I don't have a mask. She said just put this paper napkin in front of your face until you get to your table. I said Okay.

And this is just amazing, but not really: Minneapolis Won't Let Riot-Battered Stores Install Security Shutters | Cato @ Liberty

I keep hearing people I know arguing for federal intervention in democrat shitholes, where people voted for childlike governance. How does it make any sense at all to relieve them of responsibility for their votes?

Don't forget that China, with the worst GDP growth in 30 years, created the "lockdown" model for the world to follow. They were so good at it that they contained COVID-19 to one city in a country of 1.7 billion people, but somehow infected the rest of the world. I feel like lockdowns (especially), mask mandates, and other forced government responses play into China's hands rather well. I mean, what better way to drum up your GDP than create a situation where there's a massive demand for consumer goods you just so happen to manufacture?
