No problem. More than once, I have read things online that made me question the knowledge and intellect of the writer. As that person continued to argue a point, I began to realize that I vastly overestimated the intellect of a person that I initially thought was only a little stupid or foolish.
Although I grew up hunting and shot my first dove at 6 and my first duck at 7 with a .410, I normally don't comment on the 2nd Amendment online. Discussing the definition of a militia or the lack of importance of a prefatory clause takes a lot of time and rarely changes opinions. In this case, showing why Amendments shouldn't be restricted to technology or weaponry in common use in 1792 seemed like it might change a few minds.
You'd think after three drafts that if he meant, "your right to have arms should not be infringed anywhere" that he wouldn't have revised the first draft, the only one that implies that. Yet he did.
I read the document the way it's written, or do you only like textualism when it suits you? But if you want to pull historical context in Massachusetts passed a law in 1776 removing arms from those who refused to take a loyalty oath to America, done so following a similar resolution passed by the second Continental Congress that Jefferson was a part of. If you want to then take his draft of the VA constitution as a repudiation of that law, it's quite curious that he would narrow his meaning in two subsequent drafts when he could have kept that clear meaning. It's almost as if "these were not careless men who slapped down shit on a sheet of paper and called it a day."
I also think it's hilarious how you immediately assume I'm drawing information from anti gun sources or that I'm even anti gun myself when what I actually have a problem with is your attempts to reduce a person with complex opinions like Jefferson to some one note caricature. His writings and your opinions share about as much in common as the ocean and a bathtub.
You're disagreeing with something I neither wrote nor implied. Under Jefferson's framework of governance, it's almost certain none of the amendments would stand as they do today. They may not exist, they may be more expansive, or they may be less expansive, but however the cards would fall, he wrote that the living should not be beholden to the dead and you pointing to his words and saying "but the founders..." is in direct contradiction to opinions he expressed.
Super cool video and further proof of my theory that we are devolving into morons who mistake having the entire library of the world's knowledge in out pocket with being smarter than our ancestors.
Also: people arguing about types of guns just show that they do not understand rights and laws the way our moral and intellectual founders did. Laws are the attempt to articulate and protect rights that exist regardless of what the law says. The right to self defense and of overthrowing tyrants was a given to them and a person had the right to use whatever tool was needed to do so.
It comes with the territory. It's the problem with the speed of argument (SOA). This forum is moderated and relatively slow, but we are all guilty of leaping before we look. Weird but true.
Imagine an SOA in fractions of minutes? I predict it will normalize in the next decade as humanity adjusts. Until then, just enjoy the ride.
