Much appreciated. Freezer space is very common around here. And thanks to our growing wolf population people are having more freezer room every year!

Right now I’m just looking for a reason to squirrel away money for this as my next farm venture. Sheep seem reasonable because I would be virtually alone in the market and I believe I they can be contained on a single hot wire. Maybe once the kinks are worked out I will just come down for a meet and write it off!

Bring a bunch of meat to sell, and get the trip paid for.

I know nothing about goat and sheep, except a male goat is a nasty creature. What I do know, is the market for Halal goat is a valuable enough market that the local AG folks did a series of workshops to help local goat farmers market to local Muslim communities. One of the big things is to have available a place for Halal Slaughter. The idea being, you sell the goat and they slaughter it.

the discussion (esp Rip's regard for the chops) whet my interest/appetite - could only find a couple places on line

We will begin raising kiko goats next year. The sheep require a little better grass quality. As we progress i am keeping my options open. I have been told that sheep come to market weight a bit faster.

What breed of hair sheep do you prefer or have experience eating?

At what age do you think is best to slaughter? That ties into my next question, do you prefer lamb or mutton?

If I were to give some sample cuts to my customers to gauge their interest, which cuts would you choose?

How do you like to cook your lamb/mutton?

    Jake,

I purchased a lamb in march of this year, (first time purchase) not sure of the breed, weight at slaughter was 175lbs, and I paid "market price", which at the time was $1.65.

It is delicious meat, I grill the chops and ground meat. Makes amazing greek burgers. I smoked one the legs back in April, and it was also spectacular.

    $93.30/pound seems a little high.
