Though I find the comment comparing yellow stars to face masks pretty crass, I must say there is definitely a palpable level of shock when walking into a store without a mask on. I wouldn’t say it’s full-on judgment and discrimination, but people are shocked to see other people without masks when the majority in the store is masked. It’s become a social stigma.

Here in Houston, most people are over the mask shit. There are plenty of businesses that have signs that say “mask REQUIRED to enter!!!!” and none of the patrons or employees has one on (with the exception of restaurants’ waiters “wearing” masks). This is mostly in small businesses, and the national ones like Target, Home Depot, and Wal Mart are more fully masked. Though the latter have their fair share of employees wearing it as a chin strap instead.

I can understand the business need to comply with regulations or placate customers or employees. But I also think there are plenty of fish in the sea, and unhappy customers will almost certainly be replaced by anti-maskers. In fact I think eventually it will be a selling point. There’s a barbershop across town with a sign telling people that wearing a mask inside is their choice, and that’s where I’ll be getting my haircut for the foreseeable future.

    Agreed. The Shoa stands alone.

Nonetheless there is a lot of overlap in the world, at the scale of mass atrocities, as well as lesser satellite effects and precursors.

Momentum always builds in the wrong direction with complacency. There are some things large bureaucracies should not experience, for the good popular sovereignty. In this case, large-scale open-ended compliance to orders - no exit criteria. The system cannot help but to reinforce that behavior, individual intents notwithstanding.

I’m taking a few days off from work at the gym before I snap somebody’s fucking neck. A coworker told me that yesterday we had an irrate, panic stricken asshat yelling at one of our female trainers about us not enforcing mask policy strictly (I don’t do it at all, to be honest). He started calling her a coward and said something along the lines of us being pussies — how ironic. Our GM overheard this, ran out of his office, escorted the fucker to the front and terminated his membership on the spot.

I’ve never seen our GM mad in the two years that I’ve known him, but apparently he put this dipshit in his place. We’re all in this shit together, even globogym.

Holy crap, dude. What a freakin' weenie. If that were the case at my gym, someone screaming and yelling, I'd kick him out too. I wouldn't even ask my boss. I'd just do it. How unfortunate it is that this is what this world is coming to.

I'm happy to introduce you to my mother, although she is 90 and dying of cancer, so you will have to get on it pretty quick. Let me know if you would like to see a picture.
You people just don’t get the point, do you? I suppose the Jews in Europe didn’t either. They just complied with the slow erosion of their human rights until they vanished entirely.

This is not about whether masks are the antidote. This is not about whether they work or not. This is about how willingly and rapidly we, as a people, are willing to succumb to decrees and mandates because “It’s in our best interest.”

This is about bureaucrats who are almost assuredly banging on their keyboards in the middle of the night, scambling to come up with some way to force citizens into compliance. The problem? These same laws can be used in the future in less purposeful and less meaningful ways.

A friend once told me an easy way to know you’re about to get fucked: The name of an existing program, law, or process changes and suddenly you’re being told about the benefits of the new program. Think about the last time you lost a health benefit at work, got your pension whacked, etc. They always change the name and upsell the “benefit.” That’s how you know you’re getting fucked.

The “National Mask Mandates and Civil Health Protections Act of 2020” or whatever fancy bureaucratic name they ultimately push won’t stop there. It’ll be repurposed in the future, with a new name or addendum, like the Patriot Act, or other civil liberties snatching acts, all in the name of our “safety.”

That is the problem. That is what the fight is about. Perhaps there’s an articulation problem because the media has portrayed a bunch of whiny Karen’s as the spokespeople, but the real argument is about freedom. Not necessarily the freedom to NOT wear a mask, but how losing that freedom will affect us in the future.
