During his time on a Royal Navy submarine, my granddad stole the captain's rum, got hammered with his pals, and was put on potato peeling duty for months. Said it was still worth it.

My grandad, an Atlantic convoys veteran, loved this. He liked to quote Winston Churchill, who famously put down some Navy bigwigs who were giving him a hard time by dismissing Navy traditions as “rum, sodomy and the lash”. Or as my Grandad put it “rum, bum and backy”.,,,,

Skip the water, add simple sugar and you've got a half-ass daiquiri drank by men. At least when by "man", you meant guys like TR and Papa boozing it up in pre-pinko Cuba.

Anyone got any other recommendations for rum? Living in Scotland, i'm getting bored of single malts and good bourbon seems overpriced over here.

Good bourbon is overpriced everywhere. I have no experience with barrel-aged rum.
