I have also heard that rolling is to allow them to breathe at the bottom, particularly when they wear a deadlift suit and two belts. Most gym rats are just monkey-see-monkey-do.

Its pretty cool whenever you catch a guy do the 5 step setup, though. Even if he is using straps.

You can't see that's its silly to get so offended by the strong-man rules when it comes to a deadlift, to say "its not a deadlift"?
Are you of the mind-set that if one pulls Sumo in a meet, that it is not a 'Deadlift' either because is doesn't meet the SS/WFAC definition of a Deadlift?
To be fair in the past the strongmen pulled with gigantic tires that put the bar at the knees. Thus it is a rack pull. And that makes it not a deadlift. I will concede that in recent years the strongman organization has started using actual plates in an effort to legitimize the league, which they need. But being strongmen they should be able to lift without the straps AND the erector suits they wear underneath their clothes.

Definition of a deadlift = lifting something off the floor that is stationary ie. from a “dead” stop. Fulcrum: when you pick your Spider-Man pyjamas off the floor when your Mom asks you to tidy your room, are you satisfied that this constitutes a deadlift?

That's a good point. It was afterall The Powerlifting that gives The Suits. But those are still called "deadlifts", "squats", and "bench presses".

As a layman looking in from the outside, my view is, it's a deadlift, but it's not a record setting deadlift. What it is, is a training lift pretending to be a proper deadlift. The standards for the deadlift are long established, failing to follow those standards and then claiming your “deadlift” is a record against those that have followed the standard, is at best deceitful.

I experience this frequently in my profession as a blacksmith. For many reasons, few people claiming to be blacksmiths, actually do blacksmith. Many buy all the shapes and scrolls from a catalog and use a welder to assemble them into gates, railings, etc. Without getting too deep into the reasons, a couple of the most common are:

    1. By calling yourself a “blacksmith”, you can charge the public two to five times the price that a welding shop would.

    2. Being a blacksmith is thought by the public as something cool and people crave that coolness.

If you compare this to the deadlift in question, you see something along the same lines. She lacks the strength to actually pull a record breaking deadlift, so she changes what a deadlift is, so she can make the claim.

True, but they don’t call themselves strongmen. They called their league what it was, equipped powerlifting. If you parade around professing to be strong you shouldn’t need equipment to do it. And strongmen weren’t always honest about that or the events they put on. But it is entertaining to watch,
