I liked Prometheus too, I was never able to understand the universal hatred for that movie.

Great show. 2001 is such a superb movie!
However, I do think that there are quite a few Science Fiction elements in the Star Trek TV shows, especially in Next Generation.
We were talking about movies.
“Andromeda Strain” , “Planet of the Apes” and “Soylent Green” made a hell of an impression on me as a kid. They all had the shocking end. Same vintage as “2001” Yeah?
Same era, generally, but not in the same ballpark as 2001.
2001 is borderline perfection.
(Soylent green is NYC in 2022. The trailer is interesting)

I've always considered Alien to be much more of a horror film than Sci-Fi. In my opinion, it is the perfect horror movie, and probably my favorite movie period.
I thought Minority Report was a good Sci-Fi movie. I liked the idea that even when a technology perfectly solves a problem (preventing crime from happening in the first place), humans will find a way to corrupt it and create an entirely new set of problems.
It also speaks to the importance of free will, how such a pre-crime system robs society of it by judging the perpetrator before they actually do anything. We shouldn't accept justice without crime any more than we should accept crime without justice.
Wonder how that might be relevant today?
Where would you or Rusty put The Matrix on this list? I don't recall that movie mentioned, but it was several weeks ago, and I may be forgetting. Special effects were groundbreaking and still hold up very very well, and unlike the sequels (which were lame), IMO this movie was a story the likes of which I hadn't seen before.
