Along those lines, I keep a couple of ~ 1/2 x 18 inch sticks of cold rolled steel under the bed. Safe to leave out around children.

It is truly amazing how much protection is given to criminals when it is so unpopular in this country.

Popularity is irrelevant if they are not afraid of you.

Is there something extra special about cold rolled steel?

There's just something about 1018 and it's relationship with the human skull.

I would think a piece of Rebar would be a better choice, but if we're going with cold rolled, 4140.

They started life as tools to work on my garage door spring. Then I looked at them sideways, and repurposed them.

If you're going to get a weapon from tooling, you might as well get something with two functions. That's why I like hammers. Even if you never defend yourself with it, it's still a hammer. It can still drive nails into things or break things. That's why so many people carry knives. You probably will never need to fight someone with a knife, but it is so convenient to have around in daily life.

I was really just teasing about the "Cold Rolled" part.

My son inlaw is an assistant DA. I think you are giving the average thief entirely too much credit for intelligence. Agreed there are a few professionals but the usual home thief just realized he's out of meth so he steals your crappy power drill and pawns it for $10. If he has a partner they also take the circular saw and take a photo of themselves holding the loot on their burner phone.
