Rip, I'm afraid the gig might be up. I know you're not the Penile Implant expert, but if somebody on this Forum could help me, I'd greatly appreciate it.

I promise you I'm not a troll. I'm 53 years old, 5'10" and weigh 240lbs. My overall health is very good. I'm strong and active. My recent bloodwork came back with no issues. Everything was normal. I'm not a diabetic. I don't have heart disease or any of the contributing factors of erectile dysfunction. I do have low testosterone, but I'm being treated for it. I inject 100mg/week and it seems to do the trick. I wake up with morning wood, but when it comes time to "perform," it's not happening. The only other thing I could think of is I do deal with Anxiety, but I wouldn't consider it over the top and I don't take anything for it. My Doctor started me on Viagra and that did the trick for a few years, but it's now hit or miss. I then started injections of Trimix. Again, did the trick for a bit, but it's hit or miss now. The next step up is a penile implant. Just the thought of that scares the hell out of me, but all of my research has shown it has an approx 90% success rate.

I'd rather not go down that road if I don't have to. Is there something I'm missing or my Doctor is missing? Is there anybody on this Forum who has a penile implant and would like to share their story?

    Thanks in advance!

This isn't complicated: You need a new girlfriend.

It might be a little bit more complicated. If you're waking up with erections, than clearly the equipment is physiologically sound. I would therefore definitely avoid getting the implant unless you adequately deal with the anxiety and Mark is correct that the girlfriend could be the problem but there are way too many other causes as well.

You've heard that in mystery novels or films that it's always the butler that did it? Well in internal medicine, understand that one's medications are the "butler".

Accordingly make sure that you and your doctor consider everything that goes into your body including prescription and OTC meds, alcohol, recreational drugs, and weird nutritional supplements. Also, poor sleep with insomnia can be killers in causing ED. Either way, if it's not meds or other chemicals, it sounds like other chronic illnesses have largely been ruled out. In that case, I'd explore the anxiety issue (as well as depression). Whether either of these is resolved by cognitive therapy or meds or a combination, they have to be dealt with to the best of your ability.

It's been a long time since medical school and my urology rotation but my recollection is that I assisted on more penile implant removals than insertions. The technology may be different and better today but If it were me, I'd still consider this the absolute LAST resort.

Go see a female sex therapist. Processing this in words with a woman, in a clinical setting, may help you alleviate your performance anxiety or other underlying issues. Find a hot one, if you can. You’ll probably pop wood in the office. That should tell you something. If you have morning wood, you can have erections. You just have a mental block that you need to work through.

The obvious question and the elephant in the room is who are you trying to perform for? You can't get hard over a chair (presumably) because it's not attractive. Is who you're trying to perform for still attractive? I would think answering that question would come before the bionic dick 3000.

Based on the short description you've provided, it does seem mental. I'm not saying your lady is the problem (although that could be the case), but the stress of not performing well can lead to not performing well which leads to more stress and you get a positive feedback loop.

I think what is blatantly clear is that you have not exhausted all viable solutions to this prior to surgery (which, lets not sugar coat it, they're going to cut into your dick) that may not help.

Thanks for all the replies. As far as what my girlfriend looks like. I have a few of them and none of them are Miss America. We’re probably talking 4’s and 5’s out of a possible 10, but attractiveness isn’t the issue. They all have attributes/features that I find attractive. Hell, I’m 53 and the dating pool absolutely sucks at this age.

The more I think of it, I’m guessing this is more mental than anything else. Like Andrew said, the stress of not performing leads to more stress. Although I will say most of them are patient and understanding. The times I can’t perform…that really has an effect on me.

I have an appointment with a good Urologist in a few weeks and I’m going to cover all the bases. Including everything that’s going into my body.

    Again, thank you!!
