Just signed up to finally be able to watch the full episodes! I'm a school owner so I can appreciate how it's easier/more fun to teach the genetically gifted students, but I would only "coast" or have the students do bullshit if I worked for another school and were being paid poorly and/or overworked.
Otherwise, no, you don't put the genetic specimen athlete on a functional training program! You take joy in the challenge of seeing how far you can push this gifted athlete (or in my case, student). And even if the latter is true - you're overworked and underpaid - as a man it would be soul-crushing to just punch your timecard and do the bare minimum for years on end. I would change careers or employers not long after getting into that case.
So, I dunno, are these Div 1 strength coaches underpaid and overworked, bored, or just lazy? Lazy with an easy paycheck is fun at first but stops being rewarding real fast. My bet is they really are true believers - they really think this complicated, shiny shit works! - and/or it gets forced upon them from above. And if that's true some middle-manager is fucking up his job, as he's supposed to filter the shiny, illogical ideas the higher-ups may give him through reality before he issues commands to the front-line workrers.

They see the progress that talented kids always make, and they believe they had something to do with it, all the while leaving untapped potential on the table.
