A squat 5RM is suffering and really uncomfortable, but the self-disappointment from not trying might be worse. When I'm dreading my next 5RM 3 days prior -- I don't know if I'm dreading the set itself or the feeling after giving-up, since I do give-up sometimes. It is something inside of a person that makes them give it their all. I can’t figure it out, but it fascinates me. Maybe you could call it “inner drive.” Or maybe that’s a precursor to the effort – the lifter with the highest inner drive gives the most effort. Whatever it is, it preoccupies my thinking.
