This article is very helpful and I’ll try to implement. Thank you Andrew/Rip. On a recent podcast, Rip and Nick discussed how some lifters let their squat outpace their deadlift because they don’t add weight due to imperfect technique. I’m in this position with a last workout of 325x5 squat and a 345x5 deadlift. I’ve gotten up to 365x5 on the DL previously, but with a very rounded back. My squat has continued to progress without issue, but, on the deadlift, I have difficulty maintaining low back extension and being in proper position after my first rep. (2 things addressed in this article). I’ve reset the deadlift and worked my way back up a few times. Should I continue to just add five pounds and pull with the best form I can manage?

    345 DL miss 5th - YouTube

I missed the 5th rep (so my above statement wasn’t accurate). For whatever reason the lower portion of video is obscured when viewing on mobile app, but I can see it all if I make it full screen.

The first rep was okay, in that you set the back in extension before you started the rep and the weight pulled it out. The last 4 were never set. Back this off to 285 and learn to set the low back each rep.

Nick’s belly-between-the-knees cue is excellent for lower back extension.

Also, exhaling at the top sacrifices tightness.

You are confusing back extension (the "chest up" cue) with neck extension
