I danced ballet professionally for four years. After being told five times in one year that I was too big (I weighed 120 pounds at 5'4"), I quit.
"It's not that you're fat, but you look too large on stage. It's your muscle, and you need to trim this down," the director admitted during the third weight talk after telling me at the previous two confrontations that I was just plain fat.
Having quit dance, I still desired a physical activity. The director's criticism encouraged me to do something for once that appreciated my muscle. Powerlifting. And I've found that being able to lift a lot makes me feel pretty useful and confident.
