    Hi Robert,

Apologies if I’m flogging a dead horse here, but there is one aspect of the “what should I do if I’m skinny fat” issue that still confuses me.

I often see people say on these forums that you can’t burn muscle and lose fat at the same time - and I think I understand the reasoning that supports this assertion - but sometimes that assertion comes with the caveat “unless you’re a novice”.

So I guess my questions are:

    1. Is this caveat correct; and
    2. If so, does this mean that people doing Starting Strength don’t need to worry about this as they are novices and it’s only at intermediate level that choosing whether to bulk or cut becomes an issue?

    Many thanks.

    You are welcome.

    Now how strong are you?

Bench 159.5lbs (yeah I know), press 110lbs, squat 268.5lbs, deadlift 319lbs, power cleans 137.5lbs. Basically it’s my upper body that’s weak and contributes to the “skinny” part.

This is true. Your deadlift, which isn't bad, will clean things up as it goes up as well. Pull over 400 for a set of 5 and you will see.

    1) How big are your jumps on the bench press and press?

    2) Have you missed reps yet?

    3) Are you chinning?

Press and bench press jumps are 2.5kg at a time. I haven’t stalked yet.

I’m chinning using a resistance band.

You are Not Doing The Program. Add 1 kg at a time.

The reason I was taking 2.5kg jumps was that I thought you were supposed to do this at first and I hadn’t stalled yet. But I guess it’s around the time to switch to microloading and it’s better to get started with that than to continue at 2.5kg jumps and get stuck, right?
