Jordan, I understand that coming back after a brief lay-off, it's not absolute strength that's affected the most but rather the ability to crank in the volume. What is the cause of this phenomenon? What constitutes work capacity?

Both are affected, perhaps unevenly, and likely depending on the context of the layoff how far each detrains is likely variable.

Work capacity, in the context of training, is the ability to tolerate training related tasks without outstripping recovery resources.

Recovery ,in the context of work capacity, is the ability to recover between the sets, isn't it? What are the factors that constitute this recovery?

Between reps, sets, and workouts compromise the different elements of recovery.

The factors are summed up in a book that's already been written...

My question was about the biological factors that influence the inter and intra-set recovery. What changes? Glycogen levels or the ATP or something else etc.

There are quite literally hundreds of factors influencing performance, most neatly summed up by the Central Governor Model of Fatigue. In short, levels of glyocgen, ATP, ADP, K+, Na+, H+, lactate, Mg++, Ca++, damaged myofibrils, myokines, etc. etc. all influence recovery.

If you were to choose three of those parameters to evaluate recovery the inter and intra-set recovery, what would those be?

None of those. I would use objective performance or a physical based proxy of that. We have had this conversation before, IIRC.

We did discuss something similar but for recovery between two work days, not recovery between two sets
