My wife’s friend decided to train with us. She has recently underwent lap band surgery. She’s lost an incredible amount of weight. I advised her to eat 150g protein a day and beyond that I left it up to her nutritionist as to what to eat as far as carbs and fat go. She drinks most of her meals and was only able to “drink” 100g of shakes and that was all she could handle (nothing else, carbs etc). What advice can I give her if any.

If I were you I would not give her any advice unless you are a licensed RD, MD, or other professional. There are special needs for those who have had this type of procedure and similarly, it is highly likely she still needs to lose weight (although not necessarily always true). Protein shakes would be cool for her though.

Understood and you’re right I have no business handing out nutritional advice, that’s the reason I left the carbs and fat, etc up to her nutritionist. I didn’t think there was any harm in suggesting the protein intake however except to find out that’s all she could eat period. Thank you for your response.

Sounds like you were skinny before and are still skinny.

I think the problem with the lapband is that it would be impossible to program nutrition in the same way as a regular person simply because you're trying to feed an adult who has the stomach capacity of a child.

I would still encourage your friend to lift as well as teach good food habits but more than that is probably best left to people with abbreviations after their name.

In today's litigious environment, you took a big risk advising her of anything related to her post surgery protocol. Lawyers can get creative and while they may not be right, court defense is very expensive and time consuming.
