Strength Training for Martial Arts
Decided it was time to start a new log. I've been lifting off and on since 2008. I started lifting (at age 38, height 5'9" and weight 165), with the classic Starting Strength model, went through a fairly short linear progression, and spent some time with the Texas Method.
In 2009 or 2010 I took nearly a year long layoff, due to some hip issues that were exacerbated by my nidan (2nd degree black) belt test in Danzan Ryu Jujutsu.
Coming back, I started with linear progression, and made some good gains on the Texas Method again, which also brought my weight up to 175. I then started a one lift a day program courtesy of Andy Baker, but injured my back. While spending time just benching and pressing, and doing a lot of high rep low weight squatting and deadlifting, I also decided to lose weight. In retrospect, it was a bad decision to lose weight while injured and detrained. :-)
Back got better and I started working with Jordan, originally to finish up losing weight and also to get ready for my sandan (3rd degree black) belt test. Somehow I also decided I wanted to try out a lifting competition, and I asked Jordan to do my programming also.
Sandan test was last November, by then I was down to a mean 138 pounds or so. It went really well. I participated in Tom C's Strengthlifting meet in April, and put up a double bodyweight deadlift, and had a great time.
Currently, I am kind of taking it easy, back on the one lift a day program and weight is hovering at 150. I also hold a sandan in Aikido, and a nidan in Toyama Ryu Battodo, which is a Japenese sword art. I just found out that I am expected to test for sandan in that art this year, so I will be ramping up for that. And, not having enough fun stuff to do, I signed up for Tom's meet again in October.
