My personal opinion is that 5x10 at 50% 1RM is a ludicrous rep scheme.

I would maybe work up to a single heavy set of 5 so your body doesn't forget how to squat a heavy weight, but this is hypothetical.

In the past I did 20rep high bar squats once a week and made some progress. I was sore as fuck all the time though. I think 2-3 times a week is better.

    Oh, and fuck you msingh.

Yea the more I think about it the 5x10 at 50% doesn't seem like it would help that much. I think I will just ramp up to one heavy set like you said. Or maybe just do double and singles up to a heavy weight. This way I will be squatting heavy twice a week and keeping the squat volume down on the deadlift day so I can still recover well.

Thanks to everyone else with their insights and experiences.

A little update. So on my deadlift day I ramped up to doubles and singles till 315 and it felt fine. Then last night (around 3 days later) it was the 3+ day in the Squat and I did 315 for 5 easily and still had at least 2 reps left in the tank. Seems like just squatting a bit on the deadlift day did the trick for the body to remember what is heavy and to remember the movement. I am still skeptical about how I will progress in the coming months but I will give it a go and see what happens.

Squatting once a week is a far better choice for anyone who isn't planning on squatting 3x a week for the rest of their life.
Dude. Oly lifters squat high bar ATG way more than once a week.

Explain how squatting once a week is a better choice for ANYONE.

Squatting is just too fun to do once a week anyways. Not to wax poetic but doing something hard like heavy squatting often makes everything else seem like whatever.

There are a shit-ton of very strong, very successful powerlifters that only squat once per week. Coan and Karwoski were two of the strongest squatters to ever live, and both were proponents of squatting 1x week. I would guess a vast majority of powerlifters only squat once a week. Are you saying that the majority of competetive powerlifters are training wrong?

I don't question the merits of squatting more than once a week, and please don't confuse me as agreeing with msingh, but I just don't agree with making broad generalizations.

I believe Martin Berkhan of Leangains.com generally squats once every nine or so days as well, so it is certainly doable.

You are barking up the wrong tree here. Msingh doesn't provide any advice, he just craps on the advice of others. I guess if all programs led to me being fat/weak, I would probably blame others as well...
