I would rather die than not lowbar belted squat 3 days a week.
Several months ago, when I was lifting somewhat sporadically, I started feeling some pain in my hips after squatting that I'd never had before. And I thought, oh crap, age (over 50) is gettin' to me. But since I've been more regular in my workouts, squatting 3x in 9 days, the pain has gone away. In other words, all I had to do was get right with squats.
Ok. My experience of squatting once a week 5/3/1 vs squatting more (at least 3x up to 6x a week). Reps were 5's and less. Once a week the weights FELT heavier. And I was more sore. I needed to warm up alot more. I was getting frustated. Now after reading about Oly lifters squatting more than 1x a week (Broz, Pendlay and then Rip) I began doing also. I began hitting PR's that I have not hit in years (I'm 42) Now I compete in powerlifting, I sorta played around with deadlifting more than once a week. Big mistake. I can recover from multipe squat days, but the dead killed me. So I do some real light deadlifts, and concentrate on more on power cleans. Back and front squats build my deadlift. So I'm not worry there. I will deadlift once a week during a pre-competition cycle say 8 weeks away from a meet. I think beginners ( SS novice) SHOULD squat 3x a week. For 5/3/1 one add squats on deadlift, press and bench press day. Do the main lift on that day, then squat.
I realize this is a super old thread, but I have a bit of a follow up question:
I am a competitive lifter, 42yrs old, 198bw and I squat in the low 500s. I have been squatting twice a week for the past year or so and am toying with going to a once-a-week squat routine.
Because I am not familiar with squatting that infrequently, I'm wondering what others' opinions of this might be. I believe it's worth a shot for a couple of months since I need more recovery time at my age anyway, but I am looking for insight here so please feel free to contribute.
