YNDTP...correct, but I am/was running an LP. I don't squat so is 3 x 5 worksets (at near max possible weight) of deadlift too much?

Always wondered about the reasoning for the single set in the program but that also included squats on the same day.

Deadlifts are more taxing than squats, so as to not stress the body to a point where it could not recover in a useful period of time, the deadlift is limited to one set.

If you can’t squat and are using the deadlift as your primary driver of stress for the lower body I would do 3x5 until it gets heavy then cut back to one heavy set with two back off sets.

Perhaps more importantly, why no squatting?

Some intermediates do multiple deadlift sets, but not at near maximal weight. Would be at 90% of your 5rm or less. Seems pointless to me when you're a novice. Why no squats?

If you're not squatting, maybe look at trap bar deadlifts using the lower handles and snatch grip deadlifts
