Default Upper ab pain - hurts doing chins

    Hey all,
    6'3" male 240 lbs.
Just squatted 175 lbs. for my work sets.
After, I tried doing chins and got really bad pain in my upper abs/lower rib cage area. Basically doing the valsalva brings pain in that area.
I am using a 4" belt, which I believe is appropriate for my height.
Is this a cause for concern, or should I just wait it out? Was it perhaps caused by having my belt too tight?

Did it only start to hurt when you went to do chins? Were you wearing your belt when you did chins? Have you done chins before?

Yes, it only started to hurt when I went to do chins (did bench press in between but didn't notice anything then).
No, was not wearing belt for chins.
Yes, I've done chins before, never experienced this pain.

You probably just bruised something with the belt. See if you can adjust how that sits.

Did you perform any heavy deads before this pain? I've had heavy deads cause some strained abs that weren't readily apparent until I did chins.

Just a question and a thought...

Nope, have not deadlifted since last week.

It could be that you're weak there and the squats fatigued them so that when you got to chins the abz were just revolting against your efforts?

That would be the ideal scenario, although in previous years I've gotten my squat 100 lbs. heavier and never had this issue. It also doesn't really feel like DOMS, it feels more like a bruise or pull type of pain.

    Update:
I'm almost certain this was caused simply by having my belt too tight on squats. Pain was significantly abated today after squatting with a slightly looser belt.
