I agree with you that many people are overly worried about overdoing deadlift volume and that it all depends on the context of what intensity they are trained at. That being said as far as your topic you might want to think about this:
Olympic lifters treat the front squat as a main lift, not merely an assistance lift and it's easy to see why since they absolutely have to be strong in that position for the recovery of the clean. However they still back squat. Why? Because they can use more weight and get stronger than front squatting exclusively, even though if any athlete from any sport ever had a good reason to front squat, it would be an Oly lifter. Bottom line is front squats are a great assistance exercise and I like them alot on lighter days but they will never be a replacement for back squats as a strength builder.
