Default Athletic tape for hook grip

So I bought some "athletic tape" to give me a little more security when wrapping my finger around my thumb in the hook grip. Turns out the stuff I bought is complete shit, provided no grip against the chalky knurling of the bar, and fell off halfway through my set of deadlifts. What tape do you guys recommend for this?

You sure you didn't get medical tape?

You want flexible athletic tape. Anything stiff is going to be an issue.

    Wrong tape

    Right tape

Johnson & Johnson athletic tape. Available pretty much everywhere.

Wrap the correct direction -- so that the pull from the fingers tightens the tape instead of pulling it off.

This looks like the non-flexible stuff, and while it holds chalk ok, when you hook, it cuts the circulation off to your thumb pretty effectively - hence my rec for flexible tape. You can use this stuff, but imo the flexible is better and more comfortable (especially for a longer session).

I might have gotten the wrong picture. Yes, OP, definitely find the flexible kind.

I need some better athletic tape.

    Mine . . . it just . . . doesn't hold together very good.

There was another thread about this where WillD and Jordan recommended something good,
but I think it was dead lifting thread ( a million of those hard to find).

    Halp! I need ASAP.

I have a roll of this from when I used to hook my deadlifts

It was certainly sticky enough. Even with it though, I never successfully switched over to hooking, and went back to mixed. YMMV.
