Check this out. Powerlifters in South America have been trying to organize the mess that South American powerlifting is and make it into something we can be proud of. This is one of our best lifter, just broke one of the raw records in his class.

Its strange that South America seems to have a really good system/culture of competitive weightlifting but the powerlifting has been typically 'a mess' as you say.

For the UK and USA, it is the other way around.

I don't know, I know some powerlifters, never met a weightlifter around here.

Well SA is a very big place. You have excellent weightlifters from Brazil, Ecuador, Mexico, Chile etc..

That's because very few people here are interested in weightlifting.

I don't follow the sport much, you might be right. All I know is that our Brazilian guy beat Pat Mendes at the Pan Am games.

There was a Brazilian beast-of-a-man at WABDL World's this year. He was in my deadlifting flight and I was so pumped to see him lift. He was opening at some ridiculous weight (750 maybe?). Unfortunately, he bombed out, but man, I think he was the most intimidating-looking lifter there. And that's saying something.
