I"m thinking of picking up some micro plates. I'm still on a linear progression, but I think it may help in the future.

Any thoughts on where to purchase them?

    A pair costs $6 and weighs 1 1/4 lbs. Buy 6 and you can go up 1 1/4, 2 1/2 and 3 3/4 lbs.

What about some chain links hung from the bar - for small increases they're cheap and easy

Agreed. I made mine out of a couple of "#10 decorator's chains" from the hardware store. Eleven (IIRC) links weighed exactly 1/4 lbs (verified by my kitchen scale), so I made eight of those, two 1/2-pounders, and two 1-pounders. Now I can load the bar to any weight, in 1/2-lbs increments.

I bought a pair of wrist weights from WalMart that weigh 1 lb each and would fit on a bar nicely. They were $11.

By standard do you mean the 1" bar? If so, you would have to search the site and look at their 1 or 1 1/8" washers. Weight would obviously be different, but this would be good in that they would weigh less and allow for even smaller jumps.

I picked up a pair (actually, several pairs - they make great gifts!) of 1.25lb plates from Ivanko. They were "blemished" and super cheap. http://www.ivankobarbell.com/clearance.htm

Scroll down to the OMC-1.25 ($3/ea)

    I freaking love these things.
