I've heard it said before that you want a good solid base for your diet, and that you don't want too many of your calories coming from milk, olive oil, protein shakes, etc or perhaps even peanut butter. does anyone have any thoughts, opinions, or comments on this notion, and ideas for what kind of balance a scrawny novice should achieve? after all, soft calories go down so much more easily but I know that meat is important.

For those with a poor appetite, liquid calories in addition to whole food meals are often the only way to get the job done. I'd say get at least 3 major meals from food (and note that you CAN train your body to handle more food, just gradually increase the volume of food) and add liquids in between that. Just make up a big blender bomb with

    milk (2% up to whole)
    ice cream
    bananas
    protein powder
    peanut butter
whatever the hell you like to drink

Mix it up drink it in-between meals to get your calories (but do NOT let it replace the whole food part of your diet, it has to come in addition to the food you're eating).

If someone can find the old McCallum weight gain drink, that's a good place to start.

I saw this recipe on the Tight Slacks of Deszo Ban site:

    One quart whole milk.
    One pint light cream.
    One pint heavy cream.
    One pint ice cream.
    Two packets gelatin.
    One cup skim milk powder.
    Three tbsp. honey.
    One cup fruit salad.
    One cup protein powder.

    That'll up the caloric intake.

    2 tablespoons natural peanut butter
    3 tablespoons corn syrup
