    Read Bill Starr's article on Traps and had a general question regarding high pulls. The article doesn't explicitly state whether or not one uses any arms at all in the lift.
    I've seen seen youtube clips where people are doing 2 versions: in one they are essentially deadlifting with a hard shrug at the top. The 2nd is one where they do a deadlift with a hard upright row/pull at the top.

    Which is correct? Is the bar motion upwards in the high pull only due to the shrug?

    I think the idea is that you just pretend like you are trying to rack it. I was doing my power snatches last night after a weeklong layoff before quickly realizing they were 10 lbs too heavy, so some of the reps turned in to high pulls. Even in the full movements, you don't really use the arms, they just guide the bar up in the right line.
