I find that I am looking straight ahead or just slightly down with squats to keep my chest up.

If I look down 5feet in front of me I kind of get a bit crushed with the weight, I still lock out the reps but I can feel it putting a lot of pressure on the back.

Is this necessarily bad? It's only happening with heavy weights.

If your squats are still good when looking up, then sure do what works better for you. How about another form check comparing the two?

Yes, I'm going to take my camera to the gym on Monday.

Some people do better looking forward. If you can manage to keep your chest up while looking down, it is easier on your neck and can help with driving the hips.
