I don't know. It has never been a concern for me. I doubt that 150 kg. can be dropped quietly on any surface.
Dear Mr.Rippetoe.
One of the current gyms that I train on has problems with sound from a probably not correctly designed lifting platform.
How would you build/construct a lifting platform in order to minimize sounds from dropped weights (unfortunately some people just don’t use their legs/knees to "catch" the weight)?

Okey, so I will make the suggestion that they use. Balsa: the softest commercial hardwood available in order to prevent any damage to the weights or the bar.
But, seriously how should the platform be designed, i.e. how is lifting platforms designed @ Wichita Falls Athletic Club?
