    Default Irish Weakling Training Log

    • starting strength seminar jume 2024
    • starting strength seminar august 2024
    • starting strength seminar october 2024
    Jay O'Brian, 5' 11", 6' with confidence, started at 170lbs, extra weak.

I'm keeping this log to hopefully receive a motivation boost here and there and to keep myself in check.

    12/10/12 (170lbs)
    -Squats 4x8 95lbs
    -Benchpress 3x8 95lbs
    -Deadlift 1x5 135lbs

Notes: Had a buddy with me that told me I was an idiot for doing a hypertrophy routine and he told me about SS. Midway through I just dropped all the bs and did deadlifts.

    12/12/12
    -Squats 3x5 105lbs
    -OHP 3x5 65lbs
    -Powercleans 5x3 75lbs

    12/14/12
    -Squats 3x5 135lbs
    -Benchpress 3x5 105lbs
    -Deadlift 1x5 145lbs

Notes: I'm ashamed to say that I miscalculated the weight for squats. Math sucks.

    12/17/12 (176.4lbs)
    -Squats 3x5 125lbs
    -OHP 3x5 75lbs
    -Powerclean 5x3 85lbs

    12/19/12
    -Squats 3x5 85lbs
    -Benchpress 3x5 115lbs
    -Deadlift 1x5 205lbs

Notes: Had a real cool powerlifting coach check my form. It was awful so we moved my squat weight down. My core is shit. I can feel myself being easily able to lift 135 with my legs but my core gives out. If that even makes sense. Also, my ego bit me in the ass on deadlift and I jumped to much weight.

    12/21/12
    -Squats 3x5 95lbs
    -OHP 3x5 85lbs
    -Powerclean 5x3 95lbs

Notes: We were supposed to die today.

    12/24/12 (177.6lbs)
    -Squats 3x5 105lbs
    -Benchpress 3x5 125lbs
    -Deadlift 1x5 215lbs

    12/26/12
    -Squats 3x5 115lbs
    -OHP 3x5 95lbs
    -Powerclean 5x3 105lbs

Notes: Got SS 3rd Ed. yesterday.

    12/28/12
    -Squats 3x5 125lbs
    -Benchpress 3x5 135lbs
    -Deadlift 1x5 185lbs

Notes: Got a PR on benchpress (laugh it up) and it felt so cool. 45lb plates are impressive to no-nothing hotties. At least that's what I say in my head. Went down on deadlift because of the jump I made.

    12/31/12 (181.8lbs)
    -Squats 3x5 135lbs
    -OHP 3x5 105lbs
    -Powerclean 5x3 115lbs

Notes: Form was much better on squats than the last time I did 135.

Welcome aboard Jay, your progress looks good and it is good you got a coach to help early on with your squat form, now check the book and make sure he is in accord with what Mark teaches, cause they don't all say the same thing. The biggest issue I've had with the squat is keeping my lower back tight, I hurt myself last year and lost a lot of time, now I use a belt to help. There is a very good video on the web site on that issue if you're not sure what I am talking about.
http://startingstrength.com/index.ph...sition_control You didn't post your age but if you're not a geezer your progress should come along very quickly. Look forward to seeing your posts.

Hey thanks a lot, Sven! I'll check that video out now.

I did, indeed, check the book out once I finally got it and the guy seems to know what he's talking about. He's checked my form on squatting, deadlifting and powercleans and it's helped make everything click for me so far.

Oh, and I'm 25 years old.

Id say if it doesnt bother you then dont worry about it. However you are clearly gaining far more fat than muscle so your nutrition is a little OTT. What are your macros and your Pro/CHO/Fat breakdown roughly?

Oh, it doesn't bother me. I never cared to have abs. Macro wise I've been shooting for 250/200/200 which translates to 3600 calories which really isn't that much but it's what's working.

Jordan the nutrition guru would probably suggest more carbs and less fat in that diet on heavy days but do what you feel works for you.

Jay your lifts are looking good you will soon be skyrocketing by my lifts! Don't worry about the weight, you're 25, you've got the ability to put that weight to good use. Really, I wish I could gain weight with the expectation of putting it back on my lifts. If you read the book again you're doing exactly what is suggested. As I read the forum I am continually amazed by the guys who say they want to get stronger doing the SS program and then obsess over their BF index or talk about all the cardio they're doing. You've just got into this run with it. Again your progress is looking good, get all the LP you can.

    starting strength coach development program
Thanks for the kind words and advice, guys!

Sven, I know what you mean about people obsessing over their bf%. I always think to myself "Just eat and lift!" and that's what I'm trying to do.

    1/9/2013

    -Squats 3x3 165lbs
-OHP 3x5 105lbs (push pressed the last set)
    -Powercleans 5x3 125lbs

Notes: My back is a huge weak link in my squat. I broke form (rounded upper back) at the end of every set today. Switching to low bar squats even though it feels so odd. We'll see what happens.
