    Hi everyone

I've been lurking on this forum for long enough, time to post a log. There are so many helpful and motivating logs on here and hopefully I can form a small part of that.

    Stats:
    Male, 32 years old, 6'3'', 250ish pounds
This is my first time lifting weights in my life, hence the log title

    Current weights:
    Squat - 315lbs for 3x5
    Deadlift - 320lbs for 5
    Press - 140lbs for 3x5
    Bench - 175lbs for 3x5
    Clean - 155lbs for 3x3

    Current training:
I have been running Starting Strength LP for about 5 months now (with a couple of holiday breaks and some form related de-loads for Cleans and Deadlift).

Hopefully I can continue my LP for a little while longer, especially on deadlift and bench. I started working with Matt Reynolds (online coaching) about 3 weeks ago and he has put me on an Upper/Lower split given that my upper body lifts (especially Bench) are lagging somewhat.

Thanks for reading and I am always open to any advice and comments.

    Here goes nothing!

need to concentrate on better lockout

    19 December - Lower body

Deadlifts straight after squats... no fun!!

    Power Clean
    155lbs - 3 x 3
    3rd Set
Matt's coaching has improved them a lot, however still a work in progress!

    Squats
    315lbs - 3 x 5
    3rd Set
Working on staying over mid foot... have ordered a belt which arrives this week which should help

    Deadlift
    320lbs - set of 5
    Only set
These are a lot better than they used to be but still need to set my back, squoze and drag up shins

    22 December - Upper body

    Bench Press - 3 sets of 5 at 180lbs RPE 9.5
I need to remember that the bar path should not be exactly vertical... much easier when i get the angle right
    3rd Set

Press - 5 sets of 3 at 145lbs RPE 10 - really needed to rest in between these sets... straight after benching is interesting
    5th Set

    Accessories as a circuit
    Chins
    4,3,3,2
    Dips
    4,3,3,3
    Curls
    22kg 4 x 10

    Hi Peter,

looks like you're on the right track with Matt's coaching. Same here about upper body lagging behind... Good luck!

Thanks! I checked out your log... nice work getting back into it after such a long break. I'll let you know if I stumble on any miracle solutions for getting the Press and Bench respectable, but I think it's just going to be a long hard grind!

Yeah. the press was a long hard grind from the beginning But as long as it goes up, fine by me.

Thanks Damo, I figured I wasn't alone in that sentiment!

    24 December - Lower body

My belt arrived in the mail, there were some teething issues! All a learning process I guess. I was hoping Rip's article on 3 inch belts for deadlift might not apply to me given my height. We'll see...

    Power Cleans - 160lbs 4 sets of 3 RPE 7
I did an extra set as I wanted the extra practice and I wasn't in a rush this morning.
    4th set

    Squats - 320lbs 3 sets of 5 RPE 8
I think the belt made these easier effort wise but trickier technique wise if that makes sense. Obviously the technique difficulty will go away once I get used to it. Had some initial trouble getting depth right on the first couple of sets, but I think I got it pretty much correct by the 3rd set (maybe a couple of reps borderline high)
    3rd set

    Deadlifts - 325lbs Set of 5 RPE 8
Ugh!! That lower back... getting better at dragging the bar up my legs, but today I did not get properly set before each pull. Very annoyed at myself. Weight didn't feel that heavy, but that's really beside the point with a back that looks like that
    Only Set

    Circuit x 4
    Lunges x 10
    KBS 24kgs x 10
    Sit Ups x 10

    Merry Christmas everyone!

I'm just curious why you do lower body one work out and upper body the next?
