A little background on me. I am 40 years old and have been "working out" for the last 2 years or so. Much of that time I can honestly say that I have not known what I was really doing but the thought was that something was better than nothing. About 3 weeks ago I came across this video on the Art Of Manliness site. This was the first time that I had ever heard of Starting Strength or Mark Rippetoe. In this very short video I was able to see so many things that I had been doing wrong with my squat that I figured that the rest of the program could teach me a lot as well. Last week I purchased the Starting Strength 3rd edition book and have been pouring over it trying to absorb everything that I can. Today was my first day training on the program and I was mainly trying to set the baseline for the squat, press, and deadlift. Here are the results:

    Date:
    02/24/16

    Body Weight:
    211.4 lbs

    Squat:
    135x5x3

    Press:
    85x5x3

    Deadlift:
    185x5

I know that I could have done a little more on the squat and deadlift but I really wanted to focus on form today and try to get a decent bar path.

    Welcome. What is your height?

A consultation or even a regular contract with a certified SS coach is invaluable. Short of that and perhaps along with that post some videos if you are able. There are many here who can help you adjust just that little bit so you can progress well without injury.

I am roughly 5'11". I have thought about trying to video my training days at some point. If I do I may post them here.

    starting strength coach development program
This was a good day. Back before Christmas I went to the gym with a co-worker and we worked on squats and deadlifts. I had never even tried 135lbs before but found that I was able to do it with not a lot of problem at all. Getting a big head about myself I thought I would try 185lbs for 1 rep. It was not going to happen. Today I did 185x5x3 and it felt great.

Also this was the first day that I have ever tried power cleans. It felt really weird but over all I think it went pretty well.
