    Hello, all!

Some background on a new SS Forum member: I'm 57, 6'0" 180#, never trained with weights in any capacity until a few years ago (basketball players did not do that kinda stuff when I was in school). Gave CrossFit a try around four years ago, figured out fairly quickly it was a good way for an old guy that remembers being an athlete to get hurt. Heard Rip's interview with Mike Matthews on Matthews's podcast a couple of years ago, and it made an impression on me. My son trains at a Starting Strength gym in Atlanta, and last February I decided to take on barbell training to fend off old age.

I hired a coach and worked with her in person for eight weeks to help learn squat, deadlift, and bench form. SWMBO got me a Rogue power rack for our 10-year anniversary, and I shifted to working in the home gym with direction from my coach.

All in all, a good experience, and when my son gave me The Barbell Prescription (TBP) for Christmas this year, I decided to strike out on my own (with his help to monitor form and programming). I had an extended off period from training between Thanksgiving and the New Year, so set my starting weights fairly conservatively; I'd like this LP to run for a while! Thus, this training log was born.

For those that care, I'm following Program 2D from TBP, which is an advanced novice LP program. Top sets only in this log.

Will start adding my notes to the log. Looks like 'edit' disappears after a day or less, so I'm gonna try posting daily workouts for a bit.

Welcome to the board. Sounds like you have a good start and great support from your son and good equipment. Stick with the program and you'll do great. You will probably surprise yourself!

You don't need me to tell you this, but that was very classy of your son to do. I know you're proud.

Yeah, kinda makes you think he'd like me to hang around a while, doesn't it?!

    20170115
    Squat
    245 3x5
    Bench
    140 3x5
    Pullup
    182 3x5 [bw]

Notes: Lock glutes on bench. Squats and bench both looked pretty good today, with the exception of one really low (towards my waist) touch on bench. Added rep to pullup sets on the way to 3x10, then adding weight.

    20170117
    Squat
    225 3x5
    Press
    92.5 3x5
    Deadlift
    295 x1
    315 x1
    275 1x5

Notes: After consult with coach, added a couple of heavy singles to deadlift (wanted to add another set, he wants to keep rep count down but get me used to heavier weight for meet in March). Get knuckles to sky on press. T-shirt logo to the crowd on deadlifts (lock lats); make sure to lock out knees on deadlift.
