Physical Therapy after fractured L5 vertebrae?

My 13 yr old son fractured his L5 last year. After being in a back brace for 3 months he is being weened off of it for the next few weeks. He has no pain or apparent physical limitations on his activity right now but of course he has not been pushing his physical limits at all. The orthopedist is recommending physical therapy as the final stage of recovery. I am dubious of its necessity (and expense) vs a basic strength program with a light start and slow progression. What are your recommendations?
