I just saw that this football coach added Olympic Lifts for his players. I can’t imagine safety is possible with the coach to athlete ratio.

High school weight rooms are rarely an area where any real coaching gets done on any of the barbell lifts. In general high school kids are relatively resilient. Even when they hurt themselves they bounce back pretty quick. This sounds like a parent on a mission problem more than a coach problem. I think it's kind funny that the parents are more concerned about the risks of weightlifting than of football.

Yep. What a hot mess of an article. It mixes in problems attributed to weightlifting with allegations of hazing and title IX violations all from the same family. No info on the lifting, how it was actually supervised or any way to tell what the lifting looked like. Of course, we do find out that the school stopped the "Olympic type lifts."

Anyone that works around kids or in manufacturing will tell you that safety is a weapon. Saying someone is unsafe is a charge that immediately robs the accused of due process. Instead of the accuser needing to prove their case, the burden shifts to the accused to prove the absence of danger. The scope of the charge is immediately broadened to every activity the accused is involved in and the bar is lowered until any sign of risk is uncovered. Leadership is highly incentivized to overreact so they appear to be pro-safety. Is the coach a victim or a villain? We won't know because the charge of being unsafe guaranteed that he'd be treated the same no matter the facts.

    Yeah, I've seen this too.

Our kids elementary school used to repeat the "3 R's" as their core values: Responsible, Respectful, Reliable.

This past year they replaced with the "3 R's" with: Responsible, Respectful, Safe.

Weird. Safety is now a value.
