As the title suggests, I want to know if adding some back off sets on ID (intensity day) on my squats and presses would be wise. I was thinking something like 2x5 using RD's weight or 2x3 using VD's weight for some extra volume while still being able to recover with a 2 day's break for the next VD workout.

I don’t see any reason to add backoff sets on Intensity Day. Are you still making weekly progress on ID? Keep in mind, the entire purpose of the Texas Method is to display a performance increase on the intensity day. I don’t see how adding junk volume, for the sake of more volume, is going to benefit you.

He apparently thinks that the 5x5 on Monday wasn't enough tonnage on the week.

Look man, you're burdened with free will, if you want to add backoff sets, then have at it. You don't need our permission. I wish you luck with your training.
