Default Tall lifters - Tempo and Hypertrophy

    Hey Team,

I'm 6'5" and been on the SS program for a month now - fucking brilliant.

Question for the team If I may:

Could you argue for us longed lifters that while on the SS program and performing 5 reps we are entering into the hypertrophy waters. Reason I ask is I've heard that time under tension around the 25 seconds mark you are under hypertrophy. Doing lifts at 3:0:3 tempo x 5 reps for the taller folk we are around that mark.

Because I'm a novice the 3x5 is working just fine but for shits and giggles could I be on a 3x3 or 5x3 to focus on strength training not hypertrophy training?

I'm all about being orthodox and don't feel that I'm special I'm just curious.

    Cheers

I don't think you need to worry about time under tension, basically at all. You worry about force production and given that you can't change the levers you've got, the only useful proxy for that is weight on the bar. Fives will still work really well for you to build your base as a novice, and reps in that general range will still be used for volume work throughout your career. You can do some small things to play with leverages a little, but more or less the early phases of your training career will look the same/extremely similar to everyone else's. I've never yet seen or heard of a verified account of someone who was an untrained novice get strong quickly by focusing on time under tension. I've seen and heard of thousands of examples of people doing so by doing fives and adding weight on a regular and frequent basis. I don't see a good reason in theory, or the evidence in practice, at this point in time, to make that a priority, certainly not for the early stages of one's programming.

One is done for five reps, the other for fahve reps, obviously.
