I returned home from my work trip Thursday night. I originally planned not to train this day to give myself some additional recovery time from the trip. I should have stayed with the plan. After agonizing through my warm up sets, I took 290 out of the rack, began my descent, and was well and thoroughly stapled. I put everything away and called it a day.

This was an interesting day. After Friday's debacle, I wasn't sure what to expect and certainly didn't feel strong, so I kept the squat very light. I thought the bench might go okay but after barely making it through the first set, I performed two back-off sets to finish it off. Chins rounded out the session. This experience drives the point of consistency home, not just in training, but consistency in diet, sleep, and day-to-day routine. Being on the road, I ate different things, slept poorly in an unfamiliar bed, and spent many hours sitting in a conference room or airplane. No periodic walks I am used to throughout the day. The need for recovery is very real, and I must be walking a thin line between being recovered and not - or, I'm just getting old.

I felt much more recovered today. I was able to get the complete 5x3 on the press and match my x5 deadlift PR set last year.
