Eric tries LP
Neighbor kid who mows my lawn ... his dad stopped by and asked if I could get his boy strong in my garage. We'll see what happens, and see how much motivation is coming from the young man versus his father ... time and dedication will show which is which.
Eric: Age 14, Male, Height 70" (estimated), Weight 205 (Eric's self-estimate based on last weigh-in).
He's shown up 3 times now, so I'll start logging to have some data.
So far,
Squats (3x5): 45 to 85
Bench (3x5): 45 to 60
Deadlift (1x5): 135 to 175
No presses with him. I'm chicken. Kid's quite uncoordinated and I'm having enough trouble getting him not to dive-bomb his squats and chest-pound his benches.

More technique gains than strength gains so far. Each time on the bar he's just a wee bit better. I'd love to get the kid to show up in some Chucks instead of the moon-boot-looking basketball shoes he's got. I wonder if his family would be insulted, or pleased, if I bought him some chucks to lift in.

Squat is getting better. When he remembers the cues, he drives them up nicely. Still balance and control issues on all lifts. Dude's floppy, as one might expect of a slightly pudgy non-athlete middle schooler.

Need bench volume for this kid.

Personally I'd go for just adding 5 lb. per workout to his bench. The issue is you jumped 15 lb. Always assume that if your client is making 5 lb. jumps that 10-15 is not appropriate. Strength adaptations follow an asymptomatic curve.
It will make programming more complex if you just have one pressing movement. You might have to cut the jumps to 5 lb. or 2.5 lb.
This will result in 30-40 lb. gained per month. Or a 50% strength increase on bench. Yeah it will take 14 weeks for him to get out of novice territory on the bench.

Yeah that jump was a bad idea. It grew out of me seeing HOW FAST he was pushing the bar up (bar speed), but I didn't take into account his adolescent lack of body control. When I can get him to stop a) crashing the bar onto his chest, while also b) not pressing the bar up half-sideways, I'll consider moving out of the sets of 8.

Got to the goal on bench here: 5 sets of 8. Going to take these up 2.5lbs at a time and build from there, eventually peeling off reps until we're at sets of 5.

Eric went away with his family for vacation for awhile. He did some gym work while he was gone, but only upper body stuff. His squat actually looked pretty good after over a month off; I think I can add 20 for Friday, and have him in PR country on squat again next week.
Deadlift looks alright at 165; gonna take him +20 for Friday.

PR country for bench press now. Should hit PR zone for squat end of next week; deadlifts maybe also next week.

Some family stuff on my end prevented lifting Monday. Wednesday was the only session we got this week.
