    Confuzzled, don't worry about this right now. You don't lift enough yet to worry about the difference. Follow Rip's cues for the deadlift and you will be all right. The clean is different a bit in how you set up and pull, but for a beginner's purposes, learning one set of cues is difficult enough.

    Summary: Deads need the hammies tight at the beginning of the pull. Cleans use knee flexion while maintaining hip angle in order to have tight hams at the jumping position.
